The man with the donkey

While the soldiers where on the ship a sailor was giving out hot cocoa. The sailor asked a young soldier “Who are you?” The soldier replied “I am John Simpson.” John looked around the ship at the other soldiers feeling sad and sorry for them. Soon they will have to go out of the ship onto little rickety boats. Then they will go out of those boats and suffer pain.

”I used to work as a fish gutter” the soldier said. “Then why did you join the army.” Well one I will get paid twice as much and two I won’t have to listen to my boss saying to me everyday “you could have gutted 20 fish in two minutes.” The sailor was impressed “you’re a brave boy” said the sailor looking John in the eyes. “Board the boats” said the commander.

All the men where struggling to get out of the ship and into the little brown rickety boats. Finally they reached Gallipoli, the men where trying to get out of there ships struggling because of the heavy pressure of the bags that they where carrying. The soldiers where trying to avoid the gunshots being shot by the Turks. The soldiers quickly ran for the trenches; well the ones that made it out of the boats at least.

The soldiers practically lived in the trenches. They ate in there, drank and slept in there.

One day when all the soldiers where fighting John Simpson saw a shadow behind the mountain. He eagerly stepped towards it. Then out of the bushes came a donkey. John slowly kept on walking toward the donkey and it took a few steps too. John slowly took out of his pocket a horse rein that he had taken with him when he was leaving to board the boat. It had a red cross marked on it. He slowly placed it on the donkeys head. Then he taught the donkey a few things. The last thing he taught the donkey was how to keep a heavy load on his back. So to teach him that John hopped on to the donkeys back and told the donkey to start walking. The donkey kept on walking forward until John said to stop walking. The donkey stopped and slowly trotted back the other way. John thought of keeping the donkey and so he did. Then he held the donkey by the rein and led it from behind the steep, Rocky Mountains.

From that day on John and his donkey helped men that had fallen trying to get up the mountains. Sometimes when some of the men where being they would try to pull some strength together to ask John if he had named his donkey. John would always answer no even though he would have said to another soldier that’s a good name I’ll name my donkey that.

By the time John had spent 20 days in Gallipoli his donkey had 100 names from only half the soldiers! John had his own name too. The soldiers said that he was the bravest so they decided to call him (the bravest of the brave). One day when John had helped a man and was off to help another a bullet came blasting through the air. “Ahhh” yelled John with yelps of pain.  The bullet had hit him right in the stomach. He gave signal to the donkey to go and keep safe. The donkey didn’t move it just went over to John that lay there on the floor of dusty sands and dirt. He lay there with the donkey by his side rubbing its cheek against John’s cheek. In the distance you could here soldiers saying the (bravest of the brave is down).

The next day the Turks decided to leave because they knew the Australians wouldn’t give up. That day the soldiers held a funeral to remember the loss of all the great soldiers who fought in war saving their country and their people. Most of the soldiers mainly remembered the bravest of the brave (John Simpson).
